Abstract

Recycle, reuse, remanufacturing, and repair are some of the key concepts in a green or sustainable environment. These concepts are available under the theme of circular economy (CE). The socio-economic development of any country largely depends on the CE. Thus, the study attempted to discover the current implementation challenges by the Readymade Garments (RMG) firms in Bangladesh. Five large composite RMG companies were investigated to determine theirefforts and the challenges faced in establishing CE. This study conducted an FGD and KIIs to validate the findings. Lack of knowledge, technology, management support, CE establishment cost, monitoring, and fragile natural resource management systems are some of the significant challenges were identified by the study. Awareness, stakeholder participation, and conscious efforts should be incorporated along with the legislature modification, and proper implementation of the compliance monitoring need to ensured in order to reap the benefit of the circular economy.

Abstract

Organizational sustainable performance is measured through the aggregate sustainable performances of its workforce. Hence, employee sustainability performance is the central to achieve organizational sustainability performance. Again, employee outcomes are to a greater extent influenced by human resource management (HRM) practices of organizations. Based on such prominent role of HRM, the current study examines the relationship between two dimensional sustainable HRM practices (competency development and employee relation) and three-dimensional employee sustainable performance (environmental, economic, and social) focusing on the perceptions of managers of private banking organizations of Bangladesh following the notion of the social exchange theory. The current research employs purposive judgmental sampling and gets responses from a sample size of 150. Questionnaire survey is used to collect data that are analyzed using partial least square-structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM). The findings indicate that sustainable HRM practices have significant impact   on all three dimensions (economic, social and environmental performance) of sustainable performances. Therefore, this study recommends the organizations to use sustainable-focused HRM practices to achieve sustainable targets through enhancing employee sustainable performances. It is further recommended that future researcher can incorporate mediating and moderating variables to explain how sustainable HRM influences sustainable performances of employees.

Abstract

An engaged workforce is considered indispensable for providing superior customer service and gaining a competitive advantage in any service firm. Despite the fact, there is scant research on the antecedents and consequences of work engagement in the context of the service sector in Bangladesh. In particular, the role of job characteristics in shaping work engagement is still undiscovered in the country’s present literature. To fill this gap, this study aims to explore the effect of job characteristics on the work engagement of bankers in Bangladesh. Using the convenience sampling method with a structured questionnaire, the study collected 113 self- reported responses (response rate 34.77%) from the branch-level managerial employees serving in the private banks. Using SPSS, data were analyzed with both descriptive and inferential statistics. The findings of the study suggest that all the five dimensions of job characteristics (skill variety, task identity, task significance, autonomy, and feedback) have a significant positive impact on work engagement. The findings indicate that jobs that are designed with favorable characteristics will drive the job holders towards greater engagement at work. Accordingly, the study suggested implications for bank administrators.

Abstract

The research examines the effect of financial management decisions, such as financial decisions, capital management, and operating cash flows, on the profitability of 12 microfinance institutions in Bangladesh for four years, from 2015 to 2018. The financial management decisions are represented by the natural log of the outstanding loan, borrowing cost ratio, operating cost   to total income, operating self-sufficiency, and capital fund to loan outstanding ratio. Return on assets (ROA) has been utilized to estimate the profitability of microfinance institutions. The results were analyzed using the panel data regression model. Borrowing cost ratio, operating cost to total income, operating self-sufficiency, and capital fund to loan outstanding ratio are all significant determinants of microfinance institution profitability, while the natural log of the outstanding loan is a non-significant determinant. The ratio of borrowing cost and operating cost to total income have highly and negatively linked to the profitability of a microfinance institution. The operating self-sufficiency and capital fund to outstanding loan ratio have a substantial and favorable association with the microfinance institution’s performance.
